Buzz Off

“Buzz Off” earned first place in the esteemed Student Scholarship competition hosted by the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators (PSI), highlighting outstanding creativity and skill in illustration. The artwork depicts a bear fearful of bees—an unexpected twist on the common belief that bears are fearless honey lovers. I chose a childlike storybook style with bright colors and playful patterns to create an immediate sense of whimsy and approachability, softening the subject and inviting viewers to engage with the deeper message. This style mirrors the way false narratives often begin in childhood through simplified, idealized stories, making it an apt vehicle for challenging those assumptions. By pairing a lighthearted visual tone with a thought-provoking concept, the piece encourages viewers to look beyond surface impressions and embrace the unexpected truths in others.
